About the Artist
The Artist
My first studio as a child was the corner of my bedroom floor painting by number, popular at the time, and my first introduction to art. Looking back, now, I think that experience actually helped me break down the value components of an image. This was followed by classes of every kind in high school and with itinerate artists passing through west Texas. My reputation in the community as a young artist enabled me to receive a full scholarship in art to The University of Texas in Austin. The focus for my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree was sculpture and drawing, and with a minor in Art History, my love for the human form was solidified. Daily college classes with the pre-eminent sculptor, Charles Umlauf, built a foundation for my capabilities in rendering figures and portraits. His association enabled me to be the first fine arts student to cast figures in bronze at UT-Austin. Mr. Umlauf personally choose me to execute one of his commissions, the terra cotta bust of the director of the American Red Cross in 1969. Quite an honor.
My first job after college was as a medical illustrator in the communications department of The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas where I furthered my knowledge of the delicate and complex inner workings of the human body.
My hiatus to family and as a pioneer in the new Woodlands community, in 2001, my art was abandoned for years.
My 13 year commitment to my three dimensional canvas of the massive restoration of my 1880s farm in Round Top, Texas enabled me to discover hidden talents. I moved and restored 100 year old log cabins, cottages and farm houses, designed all the landscaping and treated my guests to what was billed as a five star breakfast. The Outpost @ Cedar Creek Inn developed into an award winning bed and breakfast with numerous accolades and recognition. The inn was listed in " 1000 Places To See Before You Die". What it gave me was a wealth of knowledge, personal growth and an awakening to my capabilities.
Now that I have picked up pencil and paint brushes again, I am free to paint and draw my beloved portraits and figures once again. I am no longer the little girl on the floor with paints, but am working in the Winter Street Studios in the Arts District of Houston.
